KICKSTARTER

A GREAT SCRIPT STARTS WITH A GREAT STORY

Bringing The Greatest Escape story to the screen is undoubtedly an ambitious task. After spending a lot of time researching our options how we are going to create 1867 London streets and the Limbo scene, we believe working with VFX TEAM we'll be able to create the world in which our film is set.

One of the main issues we’ll be coming across is capturing a wide 2-3,000 audience members. On our short film Budget that would be next to impossible so we would have 40 extras in the first rows (ORANGE). This will allow the Visual Effects Team to introduce a green screen (GREEN) to compliment the live action audience; And finally completing the shot together with crowd simulations in the back rows (PURPLE). This would give the illusion of a full audience of 2-3,000 in the theatre.

THE KICKSTARTERThe Greatest Escape is an ambitious short script and we want to do it the justice it deserves. A huge CAST with period costume set in the VICTORIAN ERA, remembered for many things and we want to capture it all on big screen from COSTUMEARCHITECTURE to MUSIC

KICKSTARTER allows YOU to financially support artists of all kinds and in turn receive cool Rewards. The money pledged goes directly to helping us complete our film.
Here's the tough part - We do not receive any of the pledged funds unless we are fully funded by our end DATE. Every contribution counts and will help us share an incredible project with you.
As young people, we don't have the money to fund it ourselves, but we're pulling all the stops so we can bring the budget as low as possible while still making a great piece of art.

WHERE YOUR MONEY WILL GO?

The money raised here on KICKSTARTER will be spent on all three phases of production from pre-production, principal photography to post-production. Making a short film like ‘The Greatest Escape’, the work it takes to put together the short production is not easy as there is a lot of planning and pre-visualising before pre-production. Furthermore, sound design, colour grading, VFX and music production will demand an enormous amount of man hours. Also the creative team to ensure post-production is handled well and that our finishing product is exactly as we envisioned. We hope to finish the editing process and post-production by the end of June 2014, but in order to do so, we need all the help we can get!
Here is a breakdown of where the money raised will be spent:
  • Principal Cast - Travel/Living Expenses
  • The Art Department – Props, Paints, Set Construction & Dressing Location
  • Costume Design/Hire
  • Make-Up & Hair
  • Equipment - Camera, Lights, Sound Kit
  • Transportation – Crew Travel Expenses
  • Location Expenses
  • VFX
  • DVD/Blu-Ray
  • Legal Costs – Production Insurance
  • Festival Submission Fees
This Kickstarter campaign is our way of asking for people to help us make our most ambitious short film or to be a part of making something original, unique and fresh.

Themes

The story has themes that most short films don’t seem to offer. There is a friendship between two of the main characters in the film. Both these characters are still grieving. The sense of deep loss that has not been overcome bonds these two characters together. The idea that an audience would go to a theatre and witness alive execution is peculiar yet fascinating.
There aren’t many films out there that combine the element of escaping death and avenging your life determining the past. The element of a hidden history of a country that has not only influenced our cuisine but our political system, it’s just captivating. It explores the innate humanistic thought of what happens after death in a way that is understanding yet still mystical.

Press Release

Short Film ‘‘The Greatest Escape’’

As an MA student at the Cardiff School of Creative and Industries, I am currently working on my final mastersproject, a short film called The Greatest Escape as producer and director. The Greatest Escape is a short film set in 1867, 10 years after the start of the Indian Rebellion. It is about Indian Guru, Chakraborty, an extraordinary escape artist who is given the opportunity of performing his ultimate trick for Queen Victoria. Narrowly escaping the Indian holocaust with a ... seeking revenge. Main theme friends Sevak also still grieving...

My journey started late 2012 when I was looking for a period costume drama that was set during the Victorian period. By accident I came across a short script written by an upcoming writer from Birmingham. The idea that someone would die and cheat death is an extraordinary concept although the actual story was set just after WWII but I felt that there was a lot to the story. The script had a lot of potential and needed to be more than just another story, so it felt right to have it set in 1867 just 10 years after the Indian Mutiny. Part of India’s hidden history. There needed to be a reason to why he was seeking revenge... How did he survive? It felt right....

Director's Notes

I want to make this film because I believe it is an original idea, very unique and fresh. The short story offers a lot of things that most short films do not such as the subliminal historical context. The script is written very beautifully and has that cinematic story telling which captures the reader’s imagination and makes them feel as if they are part of the story.

The story offers themes about our existence and at the same time, the characters’ development is at the heart of the story. Instead of destiny deciding fate, we are dealing with a world of playing cards. (Where it is possible to change your own destiny).

The characters have the opportunity of making a choice to do something that no other human being would be capable of doing, cheating death. The creative manner in which the writer illustrates the cliché nature of one’s lifelines is very haunting yet magical which creates an appealing insight between life and death.
